Analysis of Air Traffic During Extreme Conditions of Earthquake Action of High Magnitude

Stable operation of an air transportation network depends on multiple factors which can significantly affect the number and quality of services provided. Russian military invasion of Ukraine in 2022 caused the closing and limiting to use the huge part of airspace. Air traffic flows from North America and Europe to Asia have been re-planned to avoid entering a region with reduced safety levels. Most of Europe to Asia air traffic flows have been moved to Turkish airspace based on criteria of efficiency. That makes air traffic over Turkish airspace congested enough. In the paper, we analyze Turkish flight route network and evaluate performance of air traffic flow at the extremal condition of earthquake action of high magnitude on February 6, 2023. Open airplane trajectory data obtained from the ground network of software-defined radios have been used to evaluate flight traffic distribution by airports and for the whole Turkish airspace for both departures and arrival airplanes. Predicted average number of flight distribution by weekday is used for estimation of air traffic fluctuation during extremal condition action.
