Frequency Characteristics of the Channel for Atmospheric Turbulence Intensity Estimate with Polarimetric Radar

The operative detection of atmospheric turbulence is an important task for aviation safety. Nowadays, meteorological radars are considered as useful tools that help to detect meteorological hazards. Modern meteorological radar systems have the potentials to estimate different characteristics of reflected from hydrometeors electromagnetic waves. In this paper, we consider the approach that uses the polarization characteristic of electromagnetic wave for wind and wind-related phenomena detection and estimate and discuss the frequency characteristic of the channel to process the signal of particular polarization properties. We are focusing on the possibility to detect turbulence and estimating turbulence intensity using polarization characteristics of electromagnetic waves. Turbulence is considered a random process that influences the shape, orientation, and behavior of liquid hydrometeors. It is shown that the variation of polarization of the reflected from liquid hydrometeors electromagnetic wave includes information about atmospheric dynamic phenomena including turbulence. Then, we discuss the frequency characteristics of the transmitting channel to estimate the parameters of random processes of turbulence.
