Navigation by Pair of Distance Measuring Equipment with Extrapolated Data

Performance of on-board positioning system is an important component of aviation safety. Continuously increasing statistic on Global Navigation Satellite System lock in civil application requires development of stan-by positioning sensors on-board of airplane. Airplane navigation by pair of distance measuring equipment (DME) is one of the available methods on-board of civil airplane. Today, performance of DME/DME positioning algorithm is limited by covered airspace volume and usage of only one pair of measured distances. In the paper we study application of extrapolated data for airplane positioning by DME/DME pair. For data extrapolation we use regression model with B-Spline functions, that are tuned by previous measurements of distances. Also, estimation of extrapolated accuracy is used as a feed-back control in proposed approach. Results of computer simulation for particular airplane trajectory indicate about improvement of positioning performance during the half of flight time.
