Performance Evaluation of Positioning Methods Used in the Flight Management System

Methods of positioning by pairs of navigational aids are used as a main backup sensor on board of airplane. Most commercially available Flight Management Systems (FMS) include algorithms of positioning by pairs of navigational aids DME/DME, VOR/DME, and VOR/VOR. In the paper, we analyze the performance of positioning methods by pairs of navigational aids. We consider a transformation of measured slant range by Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) to a horizontal one at the plane of navigational aid with a help of measured altitude (about ground or mean sea level). We research influence of altitude sensor performance on the accuracy of positioning in the horizontal plane by DME/DME and VOR/DME methods. Analytical formulas for airplane coordinates calculation by data from navigational aids and barometrical altimeter with performance analysis are presented. Performance of positioning methods is analyzed using real air traffic data. Obtained results indicate that performance of positioning methods can be improve by using horizontal distances, due to its lowest length in comparison with the slant one, hoverer degraded a little by errors of barometric altimeter sensor.
