Performance of Positioning by Joint Network of Radio Navigation Aids in the Baltic Sea Region

Accuracy of primary navigation system is one of the most important factors that could affect the safety and security of aviation. Nowadays air transportation system is affected by a wide area of unintentional interference in Eastern Europe and core of Middle Eastern countries. Interference in Global Navigation Satellite System signals could be resulted to system lock, which requires to use of Attitude Heading and Reference System (AHRS) for defined by performance duration or navigation by set of navigation aids: VOR-DME, DME-DME, and VOR-VOR. Accuracy of positioning by navigation aids depends on performance and configuration of ground networks of radio beacons. In this paper, the performance of joint navigation aid network is validated to meet requirements of basic area navigation specifications (RNAV 1) for the Baltic Sea Region. Military activity due to high invasion risk in this region caused unintentional jamming of civil aviation that requiring to use of conventional navigation equipment for airplanes maintaining on a cleared trajectory. Results of analysis show that DME/DME positioning method supports requirements of RNAV 1 specification. Navigation by co-located VOR/DME could be useful in closed areas to navigation aids.
